FOUR HOCKEY PITCHES
As field hockey evolved from the late forties till date, there has been changing phases of where the game has been traditionally recognized as the playing field of the sport. In the 20th Century, the game was played on swish grounds and later to grass surfaces.
Some Notable playing pitches were a park around 37 Military Hospital, Burma Camp, Air Force Base (Takoradi), Naval Base (Accra), Kumasi (around Baba Yara stadium), pitches of most secondary schools etc.
The game has developed so fast that, the few aforementioned cannot be regarded as professional playing surfaces where the hockey fraternity can acquaint themselves to compete other nations.
The Late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills when he was Vice President, led the initiative to build the first synthetic pitch in 1999 which hosted all official tournaments. Ten Years later when he became President of Ghana, again led the initiative to convert the synthetic sand base pitch to a stadium with an ultra-modern astro turf.
The National Hockey Association (GHA) identified the Theodora Okoh National Hockey Stadium as its only capital asset to develop other facilities across the country. It therefore recognizes the importance of efficiently operating and maintaining the facility to attract funding and development partners to achieve its goal. However, a country like Ghana with great stakes in ruling Africa in Hockey cannot continue to depend on just one standard pitch, which has a lot of pressure on it and worn out.
The current administration led by Dr. Ben K.D Asante are on the move to commissioning 4 standard pitches in the first step in infrastructural development.
The 4 pitches will enhance the participation in the sport as well as give room for strategic development and marketing avenues.
These pitches are proposed to be put up at;
